When the Neighborhood Changes

Everything around you looks different than it did last year.

Your block changed. Different names, different stores. You're standing in it.

This is for:

For the Young people ages 10 to 16 who are watching their neighborhood change around them — new construction, displacement, changing demographics, rising rents, shops closing — and who are trying to understand what is happening and what, if anything, they can do about it. Also for educators and community organizations looking to build local civic awareness.

You'll produce:your Your Neighborhood Change Page

The Name It First Experience

Your neighborhood looks different than it did a few years ago. Maybe new buildings went up. Maybe families you knew moved away. Maybe the store on the corner is a different kind of store now. In When the Neighborhood Changes, you navigate what these changes mean — what drives them, who benefits, who loses, and what the people who live in a neighborhood can do when change happens faster than anyone asked for. Each path leads somewhere different. This is a story about gentrification, displacement, and community power — told at the scale of a young person who lives somewhere specific and is starting to understand the forces that shape it. The output is your When the Neighborhood Changes Agreement — what is happening in your neighborhood, what you understand about why, and what you want to do with that understanding.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What has changed in your neighborhood — and who decided that those changes would happen?
  2. Who benefits from the changes happening in your neighborhood — and who bears the cost?
  3. What can the people who actually live in a neighborhood do when change happens faster than anyone asked for — and what limits that power?
