When Adults Disagree

The people you trust are telling you different things.

One trusted voice might be wrong. Decide what to do.

This is for:

For the children ages 6 to 12 who have been caught between adults who are telling them different things — different rules, different versions of the truth, different instructions about the same situation. Also for caregivers and educators who want to give children tools for working with authority without undermining it.

You'll produce:your The When Adults Disagree Page

The Name It First Experience

The grown-up at home said one thing. The grown-up at school said something else. Or two people in your family have different versions of the same rule. Or the coach and the teacher gave you opposite instructions. In When Adults Disagree, you navigate what to do when the people you're supposed to listen to aren't saying the same thing. Do you pick the one you prefer? Do you try to figure out who's right? Do you ask someone to sort it out? Each path leads somewhere different. This is a story for children who are learning that adults disagree — and that there are better and worse ways to handle being in the middle. The output is your When Adults Disagree Page — what the disagreement was and what you chose to do about being caught in it.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What do you think the child in the story is feeling when two grown-ups tell them different things?
  2. What would YOU do — pick the one you prefer, try to figure out who's right, or ask someone to help?
  3. What do you think is the right thing to do when the adults around you disagree — and why?
