Two Languages: Nepali

You translate for your bajhai at the pharmacy.

This journal names the cost of translation and the person it has made you — in your own words.

This is for:

For the young Nepali American person who translates for their family — navigating the pharmacy, the school, the landlord's office, and every institution in between on behalf of the people who raised them

The Name It First Experience

Someone should name the role you have been playing for years — this journal is where you name it yourself. Two Languages: Nepali walks you through what it has meant to be the family's guide through the pharmacy, the school, the landlord's office, and every institution in between — what translation costs, what each language holds, and what living in both has made you. It is for the young Nepali American person who has watched their bajhai's face to see if the translation landed — who has carried this role for years without anyone naming what it actually is. You leave with a named record of your bilingual experience — the cost, the gift, and the person two languages have made you.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What does Nepali mean to you — the connection to Nepal, the Himalayas, the specific culture your family carries, and what the language holds that English doesn't?
  2. What would be lost if Nepali disappeared from your household — and what are you doing to prevent that?
  3. What does your family do to maintain Nepali as a living language — and what has been hardest?
  4. What do you want the next generation to understand about Nepali and why you've worked to keep it alive?
