Companion
Two Languages: Hmong
You translate for your pog at the bank.
This journal produces a named record of what Hmong holds that English cannot — and who you are in both.
For the young Hmong American person who translates for their family — navigating the gap between Hmong and English and the identity questions that live in that space
The Name It First Experience
Nobody has asked what it is like to be the one who translates — this journal does. Two Languages: Hmong walks you through what you carry at the bank, at the doctor's office, at every appointment where your pog waits and you become the bridge — and through what Hmong holds that English was never built to say. It is for the young Hmong American person who has translated with earned confidence for years and has never had a place to write down what that experience has actually made them. You leave with a named record of your bilingual life — what each language holds, what you carry, and who you are in both.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What does your family do to maintain Hmong as a living language — and what has been hardest?
- What would be lost if Hmong disappeared from your household — and what are you doing to prevent that?
- What does Hmong mean to you — the connection to your community's history, what the language carries from an oral culture that survived displacement, and what it holds for your family?
- What do you want the next generation to understand about Hmong and why you've worked to keep it alive?
