The Waiting Room

You spend a lot of time in waiting rooms for appointments other kids don't have.

Not knowing yet is not the same as nothing being okay. You are allowed to say that.

This is for:

For the Children ages 5 to 12 who spend significant time in medical settings — waiting rooms, therapy offices, clinics, hospitals — and who are navigating what it means to have a life that includes more appointments than their peers. Also for caregivers who want to honor that experience without making it the center of the child's identity.

You'll produce:your Your Waiting Room Field Guide

The Name It First Experience

Your life includes more waiting rooms than most kids' lives. The chairs, the magazines nobody reads, the way time moves differently when you are waiting for someone to call your name. Your Waiting Room Field Guide helps children name the specific experience of medical uncertainty — the vocabulary for not knowing yet, the scenarios that repeat, and the identity that forms around a life with more appointments than your peers. This is not about the diagnosis. It is about the waiting.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What do you think the kid is feeling when they are sitting in the waiting room again — knowing this is a thing in their life that most of their friends don't have?
  2. What would YOU do with the waiting — what helps you get through it?
  3. Is there a question you have about your health or your appointments that you have not asked yet?
