The Team Through Merger Workbook

For Teams Navigating an Acquisition, Merger, or Reorganization

The org chart says you are one team. This is where you become one.

This is for:

For the team that was merged, acquired, or reorganized and has not yet been built as a new collective.

You'll produce:your The Team Through Merger Charter

The Name It First Experience

Mergers succeed or fail at the team level — in the weeks after the announcement, when the new org chart is live and the actual work of becoming one team has to happen. Most organizations address this with communication plans. Neither builds a team. This workbook is for the team lead and the team — to do the identity work that organizational announcements do not do. The exercises move through naming what was lost, inventorying what each person brings, building shared commitments, and producing a team charter owned by the team rather than handed down by the organization. The output is not a culture deck. It is a signed agreement the team wrote.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What has this acquisition, merger, or reorg done to how your team understands itself?
  2. What needs to be named, grieved, or clarified before your team can move forward?
  3. What does building a cohesive team identity on the other side of this change look like?

Research basis

Schein organizational culture research (culture as identity — team culture formation in merged entities) / Tuckman team development model (re-forming following organizational disruption as distinct from initial team formation) / Maslach burnout inventory — organizational change as a values and community mismatch trigger / Marks et al. merger integration research (identity threat and team functioning post-acquisition) / Edmondson psychological safety research (team safety as a prerequisite for post-change integration success)
