The Hospice Worker's Workbook
You Sit With Dying Every Day. Who Sits With You.
You accompany people through the final door. This workbook accompanies you.
For the hospice worker who chose to be present at the end of life and is carrying the accumulated weight of that choice without a structure for their own sustainability.
The Name It First Experience
Hospice workers sit with dying people and their families every day. The accumulation of grief, the ethical complexity, and the existential weight of proximity to death require a sustainability framework that no job description includes. This workbook gives hospice workers a structured process for naming what the work gives them and what it costs them. The output is not a coping strategy. It is The Hospice Worker's Agreement — signed, yours.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What drew you to hospice work — and what has being present at the end of life done to your professional identity?
- What do you carry from the deaths you've witnessed and the families you've held — and how does it live in you?
- What does it mean to you to do this work — and what do you need to sustain the capacity to do it well?
Research basis
Compassion Fatigue research (Figley) identifies hospice workers as among the highest-risk populations for secondary traumatic stress, with particular vulnerability to what Figley calls 'compassion stress' — the cost of caring for those experiencing extreme distress. Research on cumulative grief in end-of-life care (Papadatou, 2000, 2009) documents the distinctive pattern of grief accumulation in hospice professionals and the professional development gaps that leave them unequipped to manage it. Post-Traumatic Growth research (Tedeschi, Calhoun) applies to hospice workers who report both significant distress and profound meaning from the work. Stages of Grief extended (Kübler-Ross, Kessler) provides the foundational vocabulary for existential engagement with death that underlies the Agreement.
