Continuing bonds theory (Klass, Silverman, Nickman): healthy grief maintains connection to the lost person or identity rather than severing it. Expressive writing and grief (Pennebaker): structured written processing of grief reduces physiological stress markers. Complicated grief (Shear): untreated grief that lacks structure and witness becomes clinical / early written processing is protective.
