Moral Injury research (Shay, Litz) applies directly to firefighters who experience the distress of arriving too late, losing a colleague, or acting in accordance with protocol when the outcome remains devastating. Trauma-Informed Care (van der Kolk) documents the cumulative physiological effects of repeated traumatic exposure — the primary occupational hazard of firefighting. Research on firefighter suicide rates (Fahy, 2019 / Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance) documents that firefighter deaths by suicide now exceed line-of-duty deaths from fire. Professional Identity Formation (Cruess, Cruess, Steinert) applies to the strong occupational identity of firefighters and the identity disruption that occurs when the body or the culture can no longer support the role.
