The Exit Workbook

A Guided Planning Process for the Person Who Has Decided to Leave

You have already made the hardest decision. This workbook makes sure you can follow through on it.

This is for:

People who have decided to leave an unsafe domestic situation — intimate partner violence, coercive control, or any living situation where safety is at risk; those who have tried to leave before and been unable to complete it; advocates working with survivors who need a structured planning tool.

You'll produce:your Your Exit Strategy

The Name It First Experience

The decision to leave is not the plan. This workbook is the plan. Who to call first. What to take. Where to go. What to do on the first day, the first week, and the first month. The Exit Plan is yours when you finish — and the decision you've already made finally has what it needs to become real.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What is making it so hard to leave — and is that reason enough to stay?
  2. What do you need to know or have in place before you can move forward?
  3. What does your life look like on the other side of this exit — even if the image is blurry?
  4. What does the first day look like — where you are, who knows, and what happens next?

Research basis

Domestic violence exit research (Johnson, Campbell): safety planning — structured, personalized exit planning — is the evidence-based intervention that most reliably improves survivor safety outcomes. Coercive control research (Stark): leaving intimate partner violence is most dangerous at the point of exit / detailed, pre-planned exit planning reduces this risk. Survivor agency research: survivors who author their own exit plans show higher completion rates than those receiving prescribed plans / person-centered planning is the evidence-based approach. Trauma-informed care: the exit plan must be authored by the survivor, not the advocate, to preserve agency and reduce re-traumatization.
