The Clergy Burnout Workbook
The Shepherd Who Has No Shepherd
You can't give what you don't have. This is how you figure out what you have left.
For the clergy person who is running on empty and has no language for it that doesn't feel like a betrayal of their calling.
The Name It First Experience
Clergy burnout is one of the most underreported forms of professional depletion in existence — because the culture of ministry often has no language for it that does not sound like faithlessness. This workbook gives clergy the framework to examine burnout honestly: what it is, where it came from, and what a recovery that is both practical and spiritually coherent looks like. The output is not a sabbatical plan. It is The Clergy Burnout Agreement.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What part of your work no longer feels like yours to give?
- When did caring for others stop being something that filled you and become something that emptied you?
- What would have to change for ministry to feel sustainable again?
Research basis
The Duke Clergy Health Initiative's longitudinal research on United Methodist clergy documents that burnout, depression, and chronic health conditions are significantly elevated compared to demographically comparable populations. Roy Oswald's foundational research on clergy burnout at the Alban Institute established the specific dimensions of ministerial depletion: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of accomplishment. Maslach and Leiter's burnout framework is directly applicable. Figley's compassion fatigue research applies: clergy carry secondary trauma from parishioners at a scope that exceeds most caregiving professions. Henri Nouwen's wounded healer theology provides a culturally resonant framework for the identity paradox of ministerial burnout. Professional Identity Formation frameworks (Cruess, Cruess, Steinert) apply to the recovery of a practitioner self subsumed by role demands.
