The Adoptive Parent's Identity Workbook
The Parent You'll Become and the History You Can't Give
You are not becoming a parent. You are becoming an adoptive parent. Those are related but different.
For the adoptive parent in the pre-adoption or early post-placement period navigating the identity shift of becoming the parent of a child whose history you do not fully know.
The Name It First Experience
You are taking on a child whose story started before you were in it. That is a particular kind of parenthood — full of love, and also full of things love alone cannot fix. This workbook names the adoptive parent identity honestly: what you bring, what you can't give, what you are choosing, and who you are becoming. The Adoptive Parent's Identity Agreement is yours when you finish.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What does it mean to you to be an adoptive parent — what does that identity feel like?
- What questions about identity and belonging do you anticipate your child will have — and how are you preparing?
- What kind of parent do you most want to be — and how close do you feel to that today?
- What do you most want your child to know about the love you have for them — and how do you communicate it?
Research basis
Adoptive parent identity research (Brodzinsky, Schechter): adoptive parent identity involves both parental identity and adoptive identity / parents who explicitly address both show better post-placement adjustment. Adoption disruption research: adoptive parent unrealistic expectations — particularly about love overcoming trauma — is a primary predictor of adoption disruption. ACEs and adoption: children in adoption have elevated ACE burden / adoptive parent identity that honestly holds this reality produces better child outcomes. Attachment theory (Bowlby): adoptive parent attachment formation requires explicit acknowledgment of the child's history — love alone is not sufficient without understanding.
