Heritage Archive: Somali American Family Stories Pack

Culturally Specific Printable Insert Pages

Your family survived the unimaginable. Ensure the story doesn't disappear with the elders.

This is for:

Somali American families shaped by civil war, displacement, and one of the longest-running refugee crises of the modern era — including families who fled the 1991 collapse of the Somali state, those who spent years in Kenyan or Ethiopian refugee camps before resettlement, and second-generation adults raised between Somali identity and American life

The Name It First Experience

Somali American families carry histories shaped by clan identity, pastoral and nomadic traditions, Islamic faith, and the catastrophic violence that began in 1991 and scattered Somali families across the world. Many arrived in America through refugee resettlement — Dadaab, Kakuma, Utange — after years of waiting. Many raised children in Minneapolis, Columbus, Seattle, and other cities who know they are Somali but have never seen Somalia. This pack gives families structured prompts to document what the elders carry: the clan lineage, the life before the war, the flight, the camps, the resettlement, and the culture that survived. The output is a documented family archive, built in the tradition of Somali oral storytelling.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
