Heritage Archive: Samoan Family Stories Pack
Culturally Specific Printable Insert Pages
Write what fa'asamoa means before the next generation guesses.
For the Samoan families across American Samoa, independent Samoa, and the diaspora — including families who came to Hawaiʻi, California, Utah, and across the United States, carrying the fa'asamoa (the Samoan way) alongside the pressure of raising children in a country that does not always make space for it, and the particular experience of being Pacific Islander in a world that confuses them with other groups
The Name It First Experience
Samoan families carry one of the most cohesive and clearly articulated cultural frameworks in the Pacific: the fa'asamoa, the system of values, obligations, and relationships that structures Samoan life. They carry the aiga (extended family), the matai (chief) system, the feagaiga (the covenant between brother and sister), and the church — usually Congregational, Methodist, Catholic, or Mormon — as the center of community life. They also carry the particular experience of American Samoa's status as an unincorporated territory, and of building community in Salt Lake City and Carson and the Pacific diaspora while maintaining the obligations that fa'asamoa requires. This pack gives Samoan families structured prompts to document what the elders carry: the village of origin, the matai titles, the aiga network, the cultural practices, and the immigration or migration story. The output is a documented family archive.
