Hmong American families carry a history that most Americans have never heard: the CIA's Secret War in Laos, which recruited Hmong soldiers and civilians to fight a proxy war against North Vietnamese forces, and then left them to face reprisals when the war ended in 1975. What followed was one of the most dramatic refugee migrations in American history — through the jungles of Laos, across the Mekong River, into Thai camps, and eventually to Minnesota, California, Wisconsin, and across the United States. Hmong culture is an oral culture. The history lives in the elders. And the elders are aging. This pack gives Hmong American families structured prompts to document what the elders carry: the clan lineage, the village of origin in Laos, the Secret War experience, the refugee camp years, and the culture — the paj ntaub needlework, the qeej music, the shaman traditions — that survived the crossing.
