The Name It First Experience
Haitian American families carry a history unlike any other in the Western Hemisphere: the only successful slave revolt to produce an independent nation, followed by 200 years of foreign exploitation, political violence, and catastrophic natural disaster. They also carry the particular experience of being Black in America while holding a Haitian identity that is distinct from African American identity — and the pride and pain that comes with both. This pack gives families structured prompts to document what the elders carry: the regional origins (Artibonite, Nord, Ouest, Sud), the Duvalier years, the immigration journey, the Kreyòl and French and English that layer across generations, and the Haitian values that crossed the water. The output is a documented family archive.
