Workbook
For Taiwanese (American) Families
A Workbook on Dual Identity, Political Inheritance, and Belonging Across the Pacific
Taiwan's identity has never been simple. This is where your family writes its own answer.
For the Taiwanese American families navigating the intersection of Taiwanese and Chinese identity, political inheritance from across the strait, and the question of what to tell the next generation about who they are. Families who carry the complexity of Taiwan's status and are building a life that belongs somewhere specific.
The Name It First Experience
Being Taiwanese in America is not simple. It carries history — with China, with Japan, with the KMT and the independence movement, with the question of what Taiwan is and what it means to claim it. Your family has navigated all of that, often without naming it directly. This workbook does not ask your family to resolve Taiwan's political future. It asks you to name — together and on paper — what Taiwanese American means in your specific household, what you are choosing to carry forward, and what you are building that is yours. Grounded in Racial Identity Development theory (Cross, Helms), Acculturation Theory (Berry), Intersectionality (Crenshaw), diasporic identity scholarship (Brah, Hall), and research on Taiwanese American identity and the politics of belonging across generations, this workbook gives your family a structure to have the conversation. The work is yours to do together. This is where you write it down. You leave with The Taiwanese (American) Families Agreement.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What has your Taiwanese American family given you — the values, the stories, the ways of being that you carry without always knowing where they came from?
- What is the political inheritance you hold as a Taiwanese American — the relationship to Taiwan, to China, to the question of identity that your family navigated and passed to you?
- What would The Taiwanese American Family Record say — clearly and from your actual experience — about what this dual identity has meant and what you are choosing to carry forward?
