For People Turning 40

The Reckoning

For the adult approaching or recently past 40 navigating career reassessment, relationship questions, or the gap between the life they planned and the one they have.

The Name It First Experience

The first forty years were for accumulating experience. Now you get to decide what to do with it. This workbook names who you are at forty — not who you were supposed to be — and builds the Identity Charter for the life you are choosing from here. The People Turning 40 Identity Charter is yours when you finish.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. Describe who you are at 40 — the specific person you have become — and what you are building from here.
  2. What does the life you want to live in your forties and beyond look like?
  3. What has this decade been — and what does entering your forties feel like?
  4. What do you want the second half of your life to look like?

Research basis

Midlife development research (Levinson, Lachman): the midlife transition (38–43) is a documented developmental period characterized by reappraisal and identity revision. Generativity (McAdams, Erikson): forty marks the peak generativity period — the developmental task of contributing beyond oneself / identity clarity is its prerequisite. Midlife crisis research (Wethington): approximately 25% of adults report midlife crisis / the primary trigger is identity discrepancy between actual and ideal self. Narrative therapy (White): midlife is a cultural story checkpoint — the halfway mark invites re-authoring the life narrative with full access to both past and future. Post-Traumatic Growth (Tedeschi): midlife frequently involves loss that catalyzes growth / identity work is the PTG mechanism.
