Research basis
LGBTQ+ youth mental health research (Trevor Project 2024): family acceptance is the single strongest predictor of LGBTQ+ youth mental health outcomes / rejected youth are 8x more likely to attempt suicide. Parent adjustment research (Saltzburg): parents of LGBTQ+ children go through a coming-out process of their own — typically denial, grief, bargaining, acceptance. PFLAG efficacy data: structured parent support programs significantly increase family acceptance rates. Attachment theory (Bowlby): parent-child attachment security survives disclosure when the parent's own identity is stable enough to hold the new information. Narrative therapy (White): parents who author their own identity response to their child's disclosure make more intentional choices than those who react from unexamined assumptions.
