For Parents of Children with Chronic Illness

The Hospital Became the Household

You became the expert in your child's illness. This is where you become an expert in yourself again.

This is for:

For the parent of a child with chronic illness who has reorganized their entire life around the diagnosis and lost track of who they are outside it.

You'll produce:your Your Chronic Illness Parenting Charter

The Name It First Experience

You know every medication, every specialist, every protocol. You have become the world's foremost expert in your child's condition. And somewhere in all of that, you stopped knowing who you are. This workbook names the parent identity that exists alongside the medical caregiving. The output is not a care plan. It is The Parents of Children with Chronic Illness Identity Charter.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. Who were you before this diagnosis reorganized your life — and what do you remember about that person?
  2. What do you love about your child outside of the illness — the full person they are?
  3. What do you need — for yourself — that you haven't let yourself want while all of this is happening?

Research basis

Pediatric caregiver burden research (Cousino, Hazen): parents of children with chronic illness show elevated rates of anxiety, depression, and PTSD compared to parents of healthy children. Compassion fatigue (Figley): secondary traumatic stress in medical caregivers is well-documented / parents are the most undertreated group. ACEs and family resilience research: caregiver psychological health is the primary predictor of child emotional adjustment to chronic illness. Family systems theory (Bowen): chronic illness reorganizes the entire family system / the identified patient's illness becomes the family's identity unless explicitly addressed. Narrative therapy (White, Epston): externalization of illness separates the child from their diagnosis / the same move is needed for the parent's identity.
