Workbook

For Navajo/Diné Families

A Workbook on Hózhó, Land, Language, and the Identity the Boarding Schools Tried to Take

They took the language from our grandparents' mouths. You get to choose differently.

This is for:

For the Navajo/Dine family — on or off the reservation — carrying intergenerational boarding school trauma, language loss, or cultural disconnection, and who is rebuilding cultural continuity for the next generation.

You'll produce:your Your Dine Family Reclamation Plan

The Name It First Experience

The U.S. boarding school system, from Carlisle to the federal schools in Navajo territory, deliberately attempted to erase Navajo/Diné language, culture, and identity. Generations of Navajo families were separated from their children, their language was forbidden, and their connection to land and ceremony was interrupted. That trauma lives in contemporary families. This workbook is built for Navajo/Diné families reclaiming what was taken and continuing what survived. You'll learn and practice Diné language together; explore the concept of hózhó (beauty, harmony, balance, wholeness); document family stories and histories; reconnect to land and cultural practices; and create deliberate structures for cultural transmission. The Navajo/Diné Families Agreement—your family's commitment to reclamation, healing, and continuity.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What did the boarding schools take from your family — and what did your family manage to keep despite everything?
  2. When you think about hózhó — beauty, harmony, balance — where do you feel it most clearly in your family's life right now?
  3. What would The Navajo/Diné Families Agreement say your family is committing to reclaim, practice, and pass forward?

Research basis

Navajo/Diné Nation history and boarding school studies (Lomawaima on boarding school policy and Native American education / Child on Native families and forced assimilation) / intergenerational trauma (Brave Heart on historical trauma and American Indian communities / Yehuda, van der Kolk / DeGruy adapted to Native context) / language revitalization (Hinton on endangered languages / Paul Kroskrity on Native language research and community) / Indigenous epistemology (Smith on decolonizing methodologies / Todd on Indigenous relationality) / hózhó as cultural framework / family systems theory applied to Native contexts (Bowen narratives, intergenerational healing) / land and place attachment (Tuan, Leopold, Native environmental philosophy).
