For Librarians

The Quiet Authority Nobody Sees

Information access is not a clerical function. This is where you document what it is.

This is for:

For the librarian who holds more expertise than the institution acknowledges and has never had a structured guide to document what that expertise is.

You'll produce:your Your Librarian Identity Map

The Name It First Experience

Librarians are among the most educated and chronically underestimated professionals in public and academic life. The work — curating access to information, supporting research, building community knowledge infrastructure, and increasingly, navigating social services in public spaces — is sophisticated and consequential. The professional identity, however, is persistently reduced to its least accurate caricature. This extension builds the practitioner behind the desk. Through structured reflection, you examine your professional values, the expertise you hold, and what an authority-grounded practitioner identity looks like for you. You produce The Librarians Identity Charter.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. Name what you actually do — the full scope of the expertise you hold — that the institution or the public rarely acknowledges.
  2. What drew you to this work — the specific reason — and describe how that reason has evolved as the work has changed around you.
  3. What do you want people to understand about what a librarian actually is that the caricature doesn't capture?

Research basis

Kathleen de la Pena McCook's research on librarians as social justice workers documents the expanded professional role of public librarians that the profession's identity narrative has not kept pace with. Maslach and Leiter's burnout research applies: librarians — especially public librarians serving populations experiencing homelessness, poverty, and mental health crises — face compassion fatigue and emotional exhaustion at documented elevated rates. Ronald Pawley's critical library science research examines the professional identity politics of librarianship. Figley's compassion fatigue framework is increasingly applied to public librarians who are functioning as de facto social workers without the training, compensation, or professional identity support of that role. Professional Identity Formation frameworks (Cruess, Cruess, Steinert) apply to the construction of librarian professional identity in a field whose authority is persistently contested externally. Career Construction Theory (Savickas) provides a framework for the librarian's vocational narrative in a period of significant professional transformation.
