This extension gives firefighters a brief, structured framework for examining who they are both inside and outside the identity the job builds, and for building a personal charter that belongs to them — not to the role. The work produces a single document: The Firefighters Identity Charter.

Professional Identity Formation research (Cruess, Cruess, Steinert) identifies the risk of over-identification with a professional role — particularly acute in high-identity occupations like firefighting. Research on firefighter identity and culture (Desmond, 2006) documents the total-life immersion of firefighting culture and the identity implications of that immersion. Burnout and Engagement research (Maslach, Leiter) identifies the loss of other life domains as a burnout risk factor. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Hayes) provides the values-breadth framework that underlies the Charter.
