For Fijian Families Abroad

iTaukei, Indo-Fijian, or Both — Identity on an Island and Off It

Fiji put two peoples on one island. This workbook helps each family document their specific story.

This is for:

For the Adults from Fijian families living abroad — whether iTaukei Fijian, Indo-Fijian, or from Fiji's other communities — who want to understand and document what Fijian identity means for their specific family: the indigenous or South Asian heritage, the coups and political ruptures that shaped migration, and what each community carries differently.

You'll produce:your The Fijian Family Abroad Document

The Name It First Experience

Fijian families abroad carry an identity shaped by one of the Pacific's most complex ethnic situations: iTaukei indigenous Fijians who are the indigenous people of the islands, and Indo-Fijians whose ancestors came as indentured laborers from India under British colonial rule, now living in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the US. The coups of 1987, 2000, and 2006 drove waves of emigration from both communities. This workbook examines what Fijian families live with: the iTaukei mataqali clan system and relationship to land, the Indo-Fijian retention of South Asian cultural practices across four generations in Fiji, the political trauma of the coups, and what it means to be Fijian in Auckland or Toronto where the two communities sometimes meet again. Document your family's specific Fijian story.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What does Fijian identity mean in your household abroad — which ethnic community, which island, which cultural practices travel with your family?
  2. What from Fijian culture does your family actively carry — the language, the sevusevu, the community structures, the Indo-Fijian or iTaukei traditions?
  3. What do you want the next generation to understand about Fijian identity — the complexity of it, and what your specific family carries?
