Workbook

For Burmese Families in the Diaspora

Military Rule, Displacement, and the Family That Survived Both

The regime couldn't take your family's story. This workbook is where you write it.

This is for:

For the Adults from Burmese families — Bamar, Karen, Shan, Kachin, Chin, Rohingya, and other ethnic communities — living in the diaspora who want to understand and document what Burmese identity means for their family in the context of military rule, displacement, and life abroad.

You'll produce:your The Burmese Diaspora Family Document

The Name It First Experience

Burmese families in the diaspora carry something that few other communities share: the experience of surviving a military government that controlled information, suppressed ethnic identity, and forced millions into exile. This workbook examines what Burmese families carry: the ethnic identities the junta tried to erase, the political losses that shaped family decisions, the cultural practices that survived, and the identity questions that diaspora life raises when home is a country you can't safely return to. Document it before it disappears.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What does Burmese identity mean when your family survived military rule, displacement, and exile — and is now building something that holds?
  2. What ethnic identity does your family carry — Bamar, Karen, Shan, Rohingya, or another — and what does that mean separately from the national identity?
  3. What would it mean to document what your family preserved through everything, before it disappears?

Research basis

Grounded in Brah (1996) diaspora theory, Berry (1997) acculturation under forced displacement, Herman (1992) trauma and identity recovery frameworks, and Silverstein (2019) scholarship on Burmese ethnic minority identity under military rule.
