Workbook
Aging Out
You're 18. Now What? The Plan Nobody Gave You.
You aged out of the system. The system doesn't teach you how to live. This workbook does.
For the Young people aging out of foster care; those with limited family support system; emerging adults without informal mentorship networks; people learning adult skills without parental teaching; those navigating independence with minimal resources.
The Name It First Experience
At 18, you age out. The system that raised you stops. Nobody gives you a plan. This workbook is the one you needed. Through concrete tools for housing, employment, finances, healthcare, relationships, and emotional life, you'll learn the skills that families teach but the system didn't. This isn't therapy. It's practical preparation for the life you're building alone. You didn't choose the foster system. You can choose how you handle what comes next.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What is one skill that other people your age learned at home that you are figuring out on your own — and what would it be worth to actually know it?
- When you don't know how to do something important, what do you usually do — and is that working?
- What does stability look like for you — in housing, in money, in people — and have you ever written it down as a goal?
Research basis
Foster care transition research (Weise, Dworsky): young people aging out without preparation face homelessness, unemployment, and health crisis at much higher rates / preparation significantly improves outcomes. Emerging adulthood theory (Arnett): ages 18-25 require specific life skills and identity development / those without family support need explicit teaching. Life skills frameworks: practical skills can be learned through structured instruction / absence of learning doesn't mean inability. Resilience research: young people develop resilience through overcoming challenges with support / practical tools are support.
