After Miscarriage

The Baby That Wasn't and the Grief That Is

The pregnancy ended. The grief is real. Both of those things are true at the same time.

This is for:

For the person who experienced a miscarriage and is carrying a grief the world consistently treats as less serious than it is.

You'll produce:your Your Miscarriage Grief Document

The Name It First Experience

Miscarriage is the most common pregnancy complication and one of the most privately held losses. The world often moves too quickly toward: it was early, you will try again. This workbook does not move quickly. A miscarriage is a loss. The grief is real. The size of the pregnancy does not determine the size of what was wanted, or imagined, or hoped for. You will document what the pregnancy was and what the loss took. You will write what grief arrived — and what is still arriving. You will record what you needed from the people around you and what you got. The output is not a recovery timeline. It is Your Miscarriage Grief Document — the grief you are allowed to carry, on your own terms.

You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.

Sample questions

  1. What were you imagining when you found out you were pregnant — and what does the loss of that feel like to name?
  2. What did the people around you say that was wrong — and what did you need them to say instead?
  3. What are you still carrying that the world has already decided you should be past?

Research basis

Grounded in perinatal grief research (Cacciatore) on miscarriage as disenfranchised grief / Continuing Bonds Theory (Klass et al.) on the ongoing relationship with what was hoped for / and Ambiguous Loss Theory (Boss) applied to pregnancy loss before the child was fully known.
