Workbook
After Leaving Ministry
Your Job Was Your Identity Was Your Community. All Three Left at Once.
When ministry ends, everything organized around it ends. Rebuild from there.
For the person who left full-time ministry and found that the job loss, the community loss, and the identity loss arrived at the same time.
The Name It First Experience
Leaving ministry is not like leaving other jobs. The congregation was the community. The role was the identity. When the ministry ends, the loss is total in a way almost no other career departure is. Your Post-Ministry Identity Document is built across five chapters: you name what ministry gave, surface the patterns, confront the compound loss, build your professional identity in language the wider world can recognize, and sign. The output is not a job search plan. It is a signed identity document.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What did you lose when you left ministry — job, community, and identity arriving as the same loss?
- What is still true about you that the role used to carry — and that you now have to carry yourself?
- What are you building in the space where the vocation used to be?
Research basis
Narrative Therapy (White, Epston) provides the primary framework for the re-authoring work required after ministry departure — the systematic reconstruction of a self-narrative that has been organized around a role that no longer exists. Stages of Grief extended (Kübler-Ross, Kessler) applies to the compound loss of role, community, housing, and identity that often accompanies ministry departure. Research on post-ministry recovery (Watts, 2008 / Proeschold-Bell) documents the distinctive psychological profile of ministry departure and the lack of existing institutional support. Attachment Theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth) applies to the community severance that accompanies departure from a congregation that was the primary relational network.
