After Estrangement
A 12-Week Guide for Grieving Someone Who Is Still Alive
The loss is real. The fact that they are still alive does not make it less real.
People navigating the grief of estrangement from a parent, sibling, adult child, or other person who was once central to their life — whether they ended the relationship, had it ended for them, or exist in an ambiguous middle
The Name It First Experience
You are grieving someone who is alive and reachable and has decided not to reach. Or someone you have decided not to reach. Either way, there is no ritual for this. No condolence cards. No casseroles. No bereavement leave. No agreed-upon mourning period after which you are expected to be better. This guide covers 12 weeks of the grief that has no funeral. You will write what the relationship was. You will document what the ending was — the actual event, or the slow fade, or the moment the door closed and you understood it was not opening again. You will name what you miss, what you don't miss, and what the loss has cost you in ways you did not anticipate. The work is yours to do. This is where you write it down. What you produce is The After Estrangement Charter: a 12-week documented account of a grief the world did not give you permission to have.
You can opt into 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins from your account. We recommend you do — the point is to see what changed.
Sample questions
- What has the estrangement made possible in your life — and what cost do you still carry?
- When you imagine a version of yourself that has fully processed this estrangement, what does that person understand that you don't yet?
- What do you want to know about what the estrangement was actually about — and what have you already named?
